Introduction: The ‘getting ready’ moments on your wedding day are truly magical – a blend of anticipation, excitement, and intricate details that set the stage for your grand celebration. At Gary Wallage Photography, we believe these quiet, often unseen moments are just as vital to your love story as the ceremony itself. This particular image, from a beautiful #swindonwedding, perfectly encapsulates that delicate prelude.
Main Content
This close-up photograph beautifully captures the intimate act of lacing up a bride’s wedding dress. The pristine white dress, adorned with exquisite beadwork and a sheer panel, features a classic corset-style back, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship. We see skilled hands, with light nail polish, carefully intertwining the white laces, creating a stunning visual of precision and care. The bride’s dark hair, styled in loose curls, cascades gently, adding to the romantic feel. The assisting person’s dark green sleeve, embellished with gold and pearls, along with a distinct blue and white braided bracelet, adds intriguing pops of detail against the blurred, dimly lit indoor setting.
The Vision Behind the Shot
Captured during a Spring wedding, this shot was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and the EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. I selected an aperture of f/5.6 to achieve a reasonable depth of field, ensuring both the lacing hands and the dress detail remained sharp while allowing the background to softly blur, focusing attention on the moment. A shutter speed of 1/200s was crucial to freeze any subtle movements, preserving the crispness of the intricate lacework. With an ISO of 400, noise levels were kept to a minimum, and the flash was fired to provide precise, flattering illumination, highlighting the texture and sheen of the dress. Using a focal length of 60.0mm offered a natural, immersive perspective, drawing the viewer right into this personal moment. This was a unique East-meets-West celebration for Jordan and Fiona at the Upper Stratton Baptist Church, a culmination of a wedding across two countries, where they elegantly blended Western wear for the ceremony and Eastern wear for their reception.

Technical Approach
To ensure the highest quality and artistic integrity, I utilised the robust Canon EOS 5D Mark IV camera body, paired with the versatile EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. The choice of f/5.6 allowed for sufficient depth to convey the scene’s context without distraction, while the swift 1/200s shutter speed guaranteed sharp details, preventing any blur from movement. The ISO 400 setting was ideal for the dimly lit indoor environment, balancing light sensitivity with image clarity. The controlled use of flash provided directional light, emphasising the textures of the dress and the hands, enhancing the overall drama and detail of this intimate moment.
