This image was captured using my trusted Canon EOS 5D Mark IV paired with the versatile EF85mm f/1.4L IS USM lens at 85mm. This focal length is a favourite for portraits as it produces lovely compression and allows for a shallow depth of field. I used an aperture of f/2.8 and a shutter speed of 1/160. The wide f/2.8 aperture was crucial for creating that beautiful background blur, making the subject truly pop, while the shutter speed was ample to ensure sharpness. The midday summer light conditions allowed for these settings, prioritising a shallow depth of field and a sharp, striking subject – hallmarks of compelling portraiture. This technical setup was a deliberate choice to achieve the specific aesthetic outcome envisioned for this planned professional maternity photoshoot.
